The Mothman is probably the most well-known creature ever spotted in West Virginia. For over a year, folks reported sightings of the mysterious winged humanoid around the Point Pleasant area. But those sightings came to a stop on this day fifty years ago.
On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge between Point Pleasant and Gallipolis, Ohio, broke apart and fell into the Ohio River during rush hour. 46 people fell to their deaths in one of the worst catastrophes in American history. And the Mothman was there, for its final appearance. People claimed to have seen it near the bridge just before it fell into the river, leading many to speculate that it caused the Silver Bridge to collapse.
That was the last sighting of the Mothman reported.
